Polyphenols present in plants are substances with various remarkable properties that are caused by number of phenolic groups. They are powerful antioxidants; many of them are able to chelate metals and bind with amino acids. Based on these properties polyphenols have a number of biogenic effects: they protect cells against oxidative stress and free radicals and thus against damage of subcellular structures, aging, degeneration and the number of other diseases. Many of them are studied as pharmaceuticals with anti-inflammatory, anticancer, cardioprotective, antiviral and antimicrobial effects. Phenolic groups of these substances often act as auxochromes as well as sites for interaction with textile substrates, therefore it is possible to use them as natural dyes for dyeing natural and synthetic fibres. These "functional dyes" bring a number of their biogenic properties into textiles, that in addition to environmental and natural dyeing acquire more "added value". A brief overview of biological and technical applications of plant polyphenols in combination with fibrous substrates is presented to outline their other uses, but the main focus of this work is on a solution of these interactions from point of view of textile dyeing. On selected dyes are discussed not only ordinary fastness, use of mordants, effect of dyeing conditions on the final hue or type of resulting chemical bonds, but also ecological aspects with emphasis on utilisation of agricultural, forestry and food wastes for this type of dyeing.
